Born to a prostitute and a lawyer in France, Sarah Bernhardt turned to prostitution herself from time to time during her early years on the stage, but eventually, she became known throughout Europe and the United States as “The Divine Sarah,” the most famous actress of the 19th century. Multi-talented, besides acting, she painted, sculpted, and wrote for publication all her life, eventually being inducted into the French Legion of Honor in 1914, even though she made no apologies at all for the public nature of her
very active sex life.
